Interview for January 23, 2000

1) This is kinda silly, but what's your favorite kind of dessert?

I would have to say that I am not a huge dessert fan but if I had to choose it would be Chocolate mousse.

2) Did you like playing Suba on La Femme Nikita? Or do you like playing Sandoval better? In other words, what's your favorite type of character to play?

I much prefer playing Sandoval to Suba.  I like playing a character that I feel I can give a lot of different layers and different twists.  I get bored easily so anything that would make a character interesting to me is what I aim for.

3) How do you compare your role on EFC to other roles you've played on TV?

Sandoval is by far the one that has the most color.  There are a lot of nuances in the character that I can play and only a few people might get and I like taking chances with the character because it lends itself to that.

4) Who is the most important person in your life? Why? Who is your hero--past or present?

There are a lot of people in my life that have influenced my growth as a person.  Each individual has touched my life in some way that I know I will cherish for the rest of my life.  I admire a great many people for their achievements and courage.  Right now I am doing some research into the story of one Gen. Gregorio Del Pilar; a boy general who fought against the Americans during the Philippine American war of 1898- 1903.

5) I know that your work on EFC keeps your schedule very hectic, but on
hiatus does it allow you any time to work on other projects? Or do you
spend the time unwinding from constant filming?

I haven’t had the opportunity to work on anything else during my stint with EFC.  I take trips during hiatus.  I spend a lot of time in Europe it seems, although I was very fortunate to spend time in Japan last year.

6) What's your favorite color?

Purple!!!

7) Any favorite quotes or stories that you could tell us? Do you have a video of your tap dancing that we could get?

No videos of tap dancing(mercifully).  Albert Einstein is one of my heroes and he said, “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”

8) What do you like best about playing Sandoval? Also what do you
like least about playing Sandoval?

I love to try and break the barriers as set out by the scripts whenever I play Sandoval.  I hate the barriers…

9) Are you planning on doing a movie in the near future? When you worked with Vanesse Redgrave did she give you any acting tips?

I would love to do a feature as soon as possible.  Venessa was a consummate professional I felt that she trusted my abilities and we just our scenes without any fuss.  I love her style.  She just comes prepared and without any pomp and circumstance she just delivers her lines honestly.

10) Have you found time to do any oil painting, writing scripts or playing
golf? Are you still taking opera singing lessons?

Yes I have just discovered water mixable oil paints.  They are heaven to work with.  I haven’t worked on a script for a long time.  It is a very lonely process and very difficult.  I am off to a golf vacation in a week’s time.  Yes, I still take opera.

11) Do you get to select any of your clothes for the show?

No.  All my clothes are designed specifically for the character and I leave it up to the designer to make the decisions.

12) Have you done any theater acting in your career?

Yes I have and I miss it terribly.  Maybe someday I will do it again.

13) How many places have you been in the world and what do you consider the most interesting culture?

I love the places I’ve been to in Italy.  I think, Cape Town, South Africa is really fascinating.  I love San Francisco.  Paris is just divine.  London is the quintessential cosmopolitan place.  Phoenix, Arizona is where the earth touches the artist’s palette.

14) Have you read some of the fan fiction writing about Sandoval? If so, what have you thought about it?

I believe I have read a couple that are quite insightful.

15) What are some of the traditions you have in your family? (i.e. putting up
a Christmas tree the first day of December, going to church on Easter or
doing something special with the kids on a special day every year or
whatever . . .

I love family traditions! They keep a family in touch with one another! :-))

16) Tell us, how pleased were you about the direction that Season 3 took for both EFC and Sandoval? Was there anything or any episode this season that really excited you because of the way you had to play Sandoval?

I am very pleased with the way Season 3 came off compared to Season 2.  I specifically like the episode, “In Memory”.  I think that was one of our better scripts.

17) If you had the opportunity to spend one day in Sandoval's world, would you take it? If so, what would you do while there and who would you want to meet with? What sights would you like to see of the EFC universe?

I spend time in Sandoval’s world every time the director says “action”.

18) If asked, would you reprise your role of Suba Caine on La Femme Nikita?

If they write the part I’d do it.

19) What do you think you'll be doing once EFC has made its run as a series on television?

I hope to be moving on to bigger and better things.  EFC has been a wonderful trip and I hope that it will garner me some recognition for my abilities.  I dearly love the fan support.

20) What are you planning for hiatus? Are you planning on visiting Italy this summer?

I will be taking a golf vacation at the end of Feb.  I will then proceed to Paris, Barcelona, London, Los Angeles, Philippines and then back to Los Angeles and then maybe Vancouver and then, finally back to Toronto for Season 4.

21) Are there any stories you could share with us about your cats, Chiaro and Essere?

They both love to cuddle with me.  They actually come to me when I call them – in Italian of course.

22) Do you think you'll ever return to the Philippines?

Yes, for a visit.

23) Did you enjoy working on Kung Fu: The Legend Continues?

I think that Michael Sloan is one of the most generous men I’ve met in this industry.  I really liked the set.

24) What do you think a fair retribution for Lili against Sandoval would be?

I would never answer that just in case Lili is listening.

25) What are your thoughts on TekWar? How about getting to work with William Shatner?

Tek War was one of my first big breaks.  It was quite intimidating at first to work with an icon but as I got to know him I found out he was pretty cool so it was fine.

26) In your opinion is the motivational imperative in Sandoval's CVI on or off?

It’s actually on a dimmer switch and it’s set to “mood” at the moment, so you’ll never know what’s going to happen.

27) Are you and your wife planning to start a family anytime in the near
future?

Huh?

28) When you worked on La Femme Nikita what do you remember most about working with Peta Wilson and Roy Dupuis?

I remember seeing stars when she clocked me with the pistol.  I remember his hair.

29) Do you know any martial arts?

Yeah, I use to hang out with them.  Unfortunately, I’m the only one that’s not in prison.

30) What is your favorite season of the year? Why?

SUMMER!!!!! GOLF!!!!!

31) In Season 3, is there a chance that we'll get to see an episode that focuses on Sandoval like Sandoval's Run did? (That's still one of my all time favorite EFC episodes by the way!)

At the end of Season 2 I asked Paul Gertz if I could get another Sandy’s Run.  He said,”NO”.

32) What actors/actresses would you like to work with that you still haven't in your career and why?

There are too numerous to mention.  Most of them will have to be European actors.  Peter O’Toole would be on top of my list.

33) Have you been studying or wanting to learn any other languages besides the languages you currently speak? How many do you currently speak and how many more languages do you hope to learn in your life?

I speak Italian but not as fluently as I would like.  I hope to learn French and Spanish.

34) If invited, would you ever attend an EFC convention in the United States? What have you enjoyed the most about the conventions you've attended to far?

I would definitely attend.  I really like people and meeting them.  People have been very nice at the conventions I’ve attended.

35) Are there any messages you'd like to give to the EFC fans in general? Is there anything you can share with us about the future of EFC and your own involvement in it?

Thank you for all your support.  If you’ll pardon the cliché, would couldn’t do it without you and we hope that our work is to your liking.  We enjoy working the show and we hope you enjoy the fruits of our labors.  I look forward to a little respite and, following that, I look forward to Season 4.  Your guess is as good as mine as to the future of Sandoval on Earth…Stay tuned.
